I acquired my Samick RL3 through a guitar store down in New Zealand when I was living there – I purchased it sight unseen after reading some great reviews on the internet, much to the amazement of the local store staff!
The finish if the guitar is gorgeous – its hard to describe it except to say it looks like a finish you would get on a guitar twice the price.
I purchased the guitar mainly for playing blues and jazz fusion style – I couldn’t make up my mind what I wanted to play hence the fusion description!.
After experimenting with different gauge strings – 11’s and 10’s - I settled on D’Addarrio flat wound 10’s for their bending and smooth sliding on the wound strings – and played it predominantly through a Gibson Goldtone 15W class A tube amplifier.
The combination worked great, awesome tone and the Duncan designed pickups were, for my standard of playing, more than just good. They were to my ears awesome.
Adding flat wounds made the already smooth neck action even smoother and playing was really enjoyable
One design feature that differentiates the Samick from a number of other hollow bodies is that the sides and center block are made from one piece of wood which means it sounds more like a solid body guitar – equating to awesome sustain.
Here is a rundown of the Samick Royale RL3’s main feature set :
- Single cutaway, semi hollow body
- Bound, arched quilt maple top
- Mahogany set neck
- Rosewood fingerboard
- Grover™ tuners
- Stop tail piece with adjustable bridge
- HH Duncan Design™ pickups
